3 Fintechs in our feeds

South Africa has one of the most sophisticated finance and payment sectors in the world. It's not a surprise that its Fintech industry has had some international interest too.

Three in particular have been quite visible on my feed - and I am not complaining. It's nice to see some personalities from financial institutions. Here are some examples of what smart copywriting and digital marketing can do.

Yoco

Yoco is the cool kid you want to hang with and actually do. The brand has its #BackTheUnderdog locked and loaded so much that South Africa has taken to TikTok to express their shock at just how accessible it is.

Their October blog is a great example of a blog that does two things: engage with your community and sell products. The inbound links are a great way to optimise SEO while telling an authentic story.

Full transparency, I have thought about opening a coffee shop just to own one of these machines.

Pineapple

One day I had a little more patience for radio ads and heard one of the most unserious insurance ads in my life. I audibly laughed. I am a 28-year-old child and I need to laugh through the pain of having unwelcomed adult responsibilities.

Pineapple knows insurance is boring and that they have to keep it short, sweet and funny. Their self-aware advertising is refreshing to see and their billboards are a great example of how impactful short-form copywriting can be.

Wait. Radio and billboards? Surely that’s not digital marketing.

I fully agree however because of their impact on traditional media, I'm a lot more aware of their presence on my feed and that’s just how it goes.

Happy Pay

Business is booming in South Africa’s buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) market.

Personally, I am not a big fan of debt but if Maps Maponyane asks me to try Happy Pay one more time, I just might. At least 1% of the transaction fees go towards planting spekboom so that makes it better?

There are other mature providers in the market but Happy Pay is the first one that actually seems to belong in my feed. It's bright, light and approachable. Their business model includes giving back to the environment which is different and I think having Influencer/Founders is very smart because they come with an established audience.
